Do You Have Solid Walls? Here's How to Check
This decides everything, and you can work it out yourself in two minutes.
Look at the exposed brickwork on an outside wall. If you can see alternating long bricks and short brick ends in the pattern, you almost certainly have solid walls - the short ends are bricks laid across the wall to tie it together. If every brick shows its long face in a regular stretcher pattern, you likely have a cavity wall.
Measure the depth of an external doorway or window reveal. Roughly 22cm or less usually means solid brick. Around 30cm or more usually means there's a cavity in there.
Built before about 1920? Almost certainly solid. Between the wars, it varies. Post-1930s is usually cavity, though plenty of those cavities are too narrow, too debris-filled or already partly filled to insulate reliably.
Solid walls are the ones with no cheap option. There's no cavity to inject, so external insulation is the main practical route - and unlike internal insulation it costs you no floor space and doesn't mean stripping out skirtings, radiators and sockets room by room.

EWI vs Cavity Fill vs Internal Insulation
We'll only recommend external insulation where it's genuinely the right answer. Here's the honest comparison.
If you have a fillable cavity, this is the cheapest option by a wide margin and you should do it first. We'll tell you if that's your situation - we'd rather send you elsewhere than sell you a job four times the price that you didn't need.
Cheaper than external and can be done one room at a time. But you lose floor space in every room treated, skirtings, sockets, radiators and coving all come off and go back, and you're living in a building site. It also doesn't help with the cold bridges at floors and party walls.
The most expensive up front and the most disruptive outside - but no internal disturbance at all, no lost floor space, better continuity of insulation around the whole building, and you get a brand-new render finish as part of the deal.
If your render or dash has failed and you're already paying for scaffold and a new finish, adding insulation underneath is the cheapest it will ever be - the scaffold, labour and topcoat are shared costs. How We Install External Wall Insulation
The finish gets the attention, but the details underneath decide whether it lasts.
1. Boarding & Anchoring — We begin by extending sills and pipework, then fix EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) or mineral wool boards to the masonry using specialist adhesives and mechanical fixings for absolute stability.
2. Basecoat & Full Mesh — Once the boards are rasped perfectly flat, we apply a polymer-rich basecoat and fully embed an alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh. This gives the system massive tensile strength to resist cracking.
3. Detailing & Beads — High-stress areas around windows and doors get extra diagonal mesh patches. We then install PVC or stainless beads to all corners and bell-casts to ensure sharp, clean lines and proper water runoff.
4. Priming & Silicone Finish — After the basecoat cures, we apply a colour-matched primer followed by a highly breathable silicone topcoat. It is floated to a seamless, textured finish that naturally repels water and dirt.
Local Knowledge: Why So Many Bromley Homes Have Uninsulated Walls
