Roughcast vs Pebble Dash - The Difference That Matters

People use the two names interchangeably, but they're built differently and they fail differently.

Pebble dash (dry dash) throws dry stone at a wet backing coat. The aggregate presses into the surface and is held by the coat behind it. Roughcast (wet dash) mixes the aggregate into the render before it goes on, so every stone is fully surrounded by mortar and thrown as one material.

Because the stone is encased rather than pressed on, roughcast doesn't shed aggregate the way dry dash does as it weathers - you won't get the gritty pile at the base of the wall. It's more impact-resistant and copes better with driving rain, which is why it earns its place on gable ends and chimney stacks.

Roughcast is a coarser, softer-edged look than pebble dash and doesn't have the same crisp stone definition. It's also more labour-intensive to apply well, so it usually costs a little more up front. On a sheltered front elevation where appearance leads, dash may still be the better call.

How We Apply Roughcast

Roughcast is heavy, so bond is everything. We check the wall for movement, damp and previous failures, remove anything unsound, and key or prime the substrate as the wall demands. On older solid brickwork around Bromley and Penge, that prep decides whether the finish lasts thirty years or three.

We build up in coats and let each one cure properly before the next. Rushing this - or applying too thick in one pass - is the single most common cause of the shrinkage cracking we get called out to fix.

The dash coat is thrown by hand or machine, keeping a wet edge across the whole elevation so there's no visible join line where a day's work stopped. On big elevations we plan the run before we start rather than working it out halfway up.

Roughcast can be left in its natural aggregate colour, mixed with coloured sand and stone, or painted with a breathable masonry paint. If you want colour without repainting, a through-coloured monocouche render finish may suit you better - we'll price both.

Roughcast Repairs and Matching

Roughcast usually fails at the backing coat, not the finish - and usually where water has been getting in through a cracked sill, a leaking gutter or an open joint. We find and fix the water route first, then hack back to a sound edge and rebuild. Patching over a live leak just moves the problem along the wall.

We take a sample from your wall, match aggregate size and colour as closely as available material allows, and test trial batches before touching the elevation. Being straight with you: a fresh patch is always brighter than fifty years of weathering and takes a season or two to settle in. Where an immediate seamless match matters, re-coating the full elevation is the reliable route and we'll price it alongside.
